Students will learn colour theory by painting assignments in the studio and to keep for future reference.
Still Life 1. How to navigate and organise a limited palette.
How to key the overall value scheme of a painting. An introduction to handling tone in paint using line, tone and shape.
Colour Theory 2. How To visualise saturation.
We will discuss the four levels of saturation.
Make examples of saturation levels through colour mixing exercises.
Designing and painting a small abstract painting.
Examples of popular artists work will be shown
Still Life – 2. Understanding ground colours.
Discuss setting up a still life.
Using knowledge from previous lessons to paint a still life in chromatic grey from complementary colours.
Explore composition, paint application and looking to other artists for inspiration.
Saturation and the illusion of space.
Spatial depth and contrasts in saturation and colour temperature.
Discuss: the camera records a scene mechanically and does not organise colour, temperature or saturation to enhance spatial illusion.
Make a small study to show the illusion of space within a painting.
This is an important lesson for anyone who wants to paint landscapes or work from photographs.
